This feature is useful if your primary BIOS chip becomes corrupted. You simply power down the system, switch to the secondary BIOS chip, and reboot into system setup. The heat sink is black colored with red highlights, featuring a glowing MSI logo and the Gaming Series shield on it surface. The six right most ports are controlled by the Intel Z97 chipset controller with the two on the left controlled by the on-board ASMedia controller. The Slow Mode Booting switch is used in conjunction with LN2-based cooling to force the board to boot at a slower and more stable CPU speed for testing. Dual Channel memory mode is enabled by seating memory modules in alternating memory slots slots 1 and 3 or slots 2 and MSI Z97A Gaming 7 ASMedia SATA.

The board supports up to 32GB of memory running at a maximum speed of MHz. These features can sometimes lead to slightly slower performance, particularly in peripheral tests that don't cause the CPU to kick into high gear. We'd rather get a sense of motherboard performance with real-world configurations, though; we're not as interested in comparing contrived setups with popular features disabled.

We used Fraps to log a second snippet of gameplay from the demo's first race. To offset the fact that our gameplay sequence can't be repeated exactly, we ran this test five times on each system. Power consumption was measured at the wall socket for the complete system, sans monitor and speakers, using a Watts Up Pro power meter. A dedicated power input to Audio Boost 2 allows for a more powerful and stable power delivery, resulting in a more explosive and pure sound MSI Z97A Gaming 7 ASMedia SATA.

The red analog audio jack is the Z97 Gaming 7's amplified stereo out. It's powered by one of two Texas Instruments OPA chips; the second amp is tied to the front-panel headphone out. These amplifiers support headphone impedances up to O, and they're not the only upgraded audio components.

The Realtek codec is covered by an EMI shield, the traces are isolated from other board circuitry, the capacitors are fancy Nichicon units, and the power supply can be switched to an external feed driven by a four-pin Molex connector. All those tweaks combine to produce pretty decent sound quality. MSI Z97A Gaming 7 ASMedia SATA output doesn't sound as rich or detailed as that of our favorite budget sound card, but it's good for an integrated solution. There's no obvious hissing or distortion in the line even when the system is slammed with a combined CPU, GPU, and storage load.

The final piece of the audio puzzle is Creative's Sound Blaster Cinema 2 software. This application provides surround-sound virtualization in addition to a bunch of configurable effects that most folks will probably never use.

I'd trade all of those effects for the ability to encode multi-channel audio for digital output. Integrated audio is a big-ticket item, but we've been reviewing motherboards long enough to know that it's often the little things MSI Z97A Gaming 7 ASMedia SATA make the biggest impression. With that in mind, we'd be remiss not to discuss some of the smaller details that make the Z97 Gaming 7 particularly appealing. The soft-backed shield makes motherboard installation much easier, and it's colored black both inside and out. While the port cluster is in view, note the CMOS MSI Z97A Gaming 7 ASMedia SATA button on the left side. There are other onboard buttons, as well, including the requisite power and reset switches. Holding the power button for a few seconds boots the board directly into the firmware, which is very convenient.
